A Word about SAP Upgrades
“Never underestimate the impact of incremental progress”
There are two kinds of SAP upgrade projects: technical and techno-functional. Technical upgrades happen within the same version (e.g., from S/4HANA version 1609 to version 2020). Functionally, these projects have minimal impact. It is essentially a Basis exercise to perform a system update, just like on your smart phone. But risk to global business operations is significant. It is, for this reason, of utmost importance to structure a team of functional experts who will regression-test the entire system. Basis will implement scores of SAP Notes based on functional findings and perform the SAP instance upgrade.
Techno-functional upgrades are more involved, because they often happen in order to transition from major SAP releases, for example ECC to S/4HANA. In most cases there are no system tools which will port business logic from one system to another. For this reason, a global project team needs to be assembled & orchestrated to achieve successful SAP deployment.
